Please donate to the Hero Initiative!

For the past two years, our release schedule has been dominated by collections of comics that L.L. Hundal and Steve Miller have unearthed from the dusty, forgotten corners of the Golden Age of Comics. Many of them were written, drawn, and published by men and women who, mostly labored in anonymity and faded into obscurity even more total than that which befell their creations. Some died impoverished and alone.

The Hero Initiative is a charity devoted to providing a safety net to comics creators and put an end to the tragic tales of brilliantly creative people ending up in squalor and misery due to health issues. When we were asked to contribute a book to a fundraising bundle being produced by DriveThruComics, we naturally jumped at the chance. We have derived endless pleasure and inspiration (and even a little gas money, through the collections we publish) off the comics from yesteryear that we should do our part to give back to the comic book creators who find themselves in need.

The We Love Comic Creators Bundle contains comics from more than 50 publishers, including Science Sleuths #3 from NUELOW Games. You get over $125 worth of fantastic comics for a donation of $20. It's a fantastic deal and to the benefit of a fantastic charity.

T is for T.N.T.

When the United States government was recruiting scientists to work on the Manhattan Project, they overlooked one of the most brilliant nuclear scientists to ever live. Not only did Treve N. Thorndyke manage to split the atom in his personal workshop (while avoiding killing himself in the process), he also managed to invent an "atom gun" that was far more surgical in its killing capacity than any other atomic weapon devised by humanity. Thankfully, Thornedyke chose to use his invention for good rather than evil, putting on a mask and cape and joining the superhero set as T.N.T.

T.N.T. made his one-and-lonly appearance in the pages of Amazing Man Comics #21. Published by Centaur with a cover date of March 1941, this series was the most successful of all the titles featuring creations from the studios run by Harry "A" Chesler, and it was a treasure trove of exciting and bizarre comic book heroes--the strangest of which being Mighty Man, who is best described as a cross between Paul Bunyan, Hercules, and Plastic Man. (I'm going to be putting a book or two together of Mighty Man's weirdest adventures at some point.)

T.N.T. is one of artist Dan Gormley's first published professional works; Chesler and his editors had a great eye for talented artists and they gave many industry giants their first paying comics gigs... including Joe Kubert, who swept up around the studio as a young boy while getting pointers from the artists as they labored over their drawingboards. By mid-1941, Gormley was a staff artist at Dell/Western, and he would eventually become one of the premiere illustrators of children's comics.

As for T.N.T., although his one appearance ends with a great set-up for future adventures--he's wanted by both the law AND the underworld--he was never heard from again. We will rectify that ever-so-slightly, as he is slated to join the Science Sleuths line-up of characters. Look for him in Issue #6 in a couple of months, where he'll be featured in an all-new roleplaying game adventure!

Miller's latest attempts at cover design

Here's what in all likelihood will be the covers of two upcoming NUELOW Games releases. Both were put together by Steve Miller, who does not claim to be much of a graphic designer.

'Science Sleuths #4' brings four different series under one cover

The fourth issue of Science Sleuths is our most varied yet. It brings four different strips from the Golden Age of comics, with regular features "Jill Trent, Science Sleuth" and "Rocketman" being joined by the cross-time adventures of Ace Buckley and paranormal expert Armand Broussard, the Werewolf Hunter. And it's all behind a killer cover by Gus Ricca.

In addition to the comics, which are brimming with roleplaying game scenario ideas, Science Sleuths #4 contains matieral for use with OGL Modern (or any d20 System game that could benefit from a handful of gadget, and NUELOW's flagship game, ROLF!

NUELOW Heroes & Villains: Ace Buckley and Toni Stark

In Science Sleuths #4 (releasing later this week), another science-minded couple joins the line-up--Ace Buckley and Toni Stark, time-travelers. They will also appear in Science Sleuths #5, and they may or may not be the stars of a Thanksgiving-themed ROLF! supplement. I have an idea for what I think is a cute short story that I hopefully will get done in time; if not, it will show in Science Sleuths #5.

Ace and Toni visit Queen Bess's England. More in Science Sleuths #4.

Meanwhile, here are Ace and Toni ala ROLF! (created with input from L.L. Hundal) along with a time-travel oriented, never-before-seen Combat Maneuver. Other Traits or Combat Maneuvers not in the basic ROLF! rule book can be found in Science Sleuths #4, or ROLF! Christmas Special III.

ACE BUCKLEY (Male)
Brawn 17, Body 15, Brains 8
Traits: Dead-Eye, Driver, Improv Master, Too Sexy for My Shirt
Combat Maneuvers: Basic Attack, Debate Philosophy, Disarm, Dodge, Driver, Murderous Mitts, Sure Shot, Time Traveler
Important Stuff Worn/Wielded: Type of Armor appropriate to time period he has traveled to (absorbs 1-3 points of damage); Medium-sized Melee or Ranged weapon, appropriate to the time period he has traveled to (deals 3 points of damage).
Origin Story: Ace Buckley was an engineer and scientist who worked for the Stark Machine and Manufacturing Company. Einstein's Theory of Relativity fired his imagination, and he eventually designed what he was sure was a working time machine. Toni Stark, the daughter of Ace's boss, help fund the construction of an actual working machine... and then joined Ace on his travels through time to witness (and sometimes interfere with) historically important events.

TONI STARK (Female)
Brawn 14, Body 15, Brains 7
   Traits: Busty, Nimble
Combat Maneuvers: Basic Attack, Bitch Slap, Dance Move, Dodge, Seduce, The Walk, Time Traveler
Important Stuff Worn/Wielded: Clothes appropriate for time period she has traveled to. Small Melee Weapon appropriate to the time she has traveled to (deals 2 points of damage).
Origin Story: Although every bit as brilliant and scientifically minded as her brother Howard, their parents wanted nothing for Antonia "Toni" Stark but for her to find a socially suitable husband. Toni had different ideas, though, and she began befriending fringe scientists and researchers in the hopes of finding an outlet for her intellect and scientific curiosity. When she heard that an employee of her father's firm was pursuing time-travel technology in his spare time, she knew that she had to be part of that effort. She helped fund Ace Buckley's construction of a working time machine and became his traveling companion through the ages.

New Combat Maneuver
Time Traveler: The character has access to a time machine or some other method to travel through time. If a fight that is ended through the successful use of the Run Away Combat Maneuver, or similar game effect, the character uses his or her time travel machine to restart the fight. All characters return to their original starting position.

On sale now -- 'Science Sleuths #3'

As seems appropriate for the third issue of our popular Science Sleuths comic/rpg anthology series,we're bringing installments of three different series featuring crime-fighting scientists.

With Science Sleuths #3,"Rocketman" gets added to the mix. "Rocketman" chronicles the adventures of Cal Martin and his fiancee Doris Dalton. Partners in love and business, who also share a passion for crime-fighting, they are brilliant inventors who have chosen to keep their greatest inventions for themselves and to use them to become the costumed superheroes Rocketman and Rocketgirl.

This issue also features ROLF! stats for Rocketman and Rocketgirl.

For the next few issues, "Rocketman" will be the lead feature in Science Sleuths, with Jill Trent becoming the backup feature. Some of the "Rocketman" stories will be extra-special, as they will feature partially new scripts by NUELOW Games's lead designer and publisher Steve Miller.. This issue marks the final time Spider Queen slings her webs, though.

More "Science Sleuths" from NUELOW Games!

Brains, beauty, and a healthy helping of brawn... they're shooting from the hip and making weird science!

Science Sleuths #2 is now available for purchase at all the usual outlets! Click here to see previews or to get your very own copy. It features three action-packed stories starring Jill Trent and Daisy Smythe, as well as another Spider Queen tale. As always, there are some RPG tidbits as well--this time, it's d20 Modern OGL stats for Jill, Daisy, the Spider Queen, and the original Black Cat, the leading lady of our comics line. There are also a couple of other amusing filler items, because Steve Miller is obsessed with trying to make sure stories and chapters start on right-hand pages.

A special attraction in this issue is "Jill Trent: The Freezer Gas," which features early artwork from the legendary Frank Frazetta.

New releases, more characters turned gay, and a contest!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NUELOW Games Discovers Three More Gay
Golden Age Comic Book Characters

NUELOW Games continues to be on the cutting edge with its digital-only reprints of classic comics. Not only does the just-released Film Fun Comics Vol. 3: British Agent 99 for the first time collect that entire series in one place, but it continues the company's tradition of turning Golden Age comic book characters gay.

From a statement by NUELOW Games publisher/lead designer/creative director/editor/whatever-else-he-feels-like-calling-himself-today Steve Miller: "Over the course of our three most recent releases--ROLF!: Christmas Special III, Science Sleuths #1, and Film Fun Comics Vol. 3: British Agent 99-- L.L. Hundal and I have turned as many Golden Age comic book characters gay. Not only that, but one of the characters we turned gay is closeted. Yes... we assigned sexuality to a character where there previously wasn't any and we made that character hide in the closet. Can you get any edgier than that?"

From a statement by NUELOW Games editor/designer L.L. Hundal: "We've been putting gay characters in NUELOW Games products since 1994, since long before it was hit upon as a marketing tool by the likes of DC Comics and Piazo, and whoever else has been running around singing their own praises. We have even included the option for players to make their own gay characters in several of our games. We've been doing it quietly, and we've been doing it when it since before it was trendy. Since 2011, we've been turning Golden Age characters gay in our products... and the first time we did it, in ROLF!: Black Kitten vs. June Collyer, we didn't even think anything of it. It just seemed natural and it seemed funny.
"We're making a big deal out of doing it this time not because we're jealous of the attention that DC Comics got when they turned Golden Age Green Lantern gay, or because Paizo got praised for being the ultimate measure in producing inclusive game material for saying some of their iconic characters are gay but not which ones, and for fluffy source material in setting manuals, but because we feel that it's time someone noticed the important and creatively weighty work that we're--
"Oh, to hell with it. We're making a big deal out of it this time because we're attention whores, just like everyone else who jumps up and down and issues self-congratulating statements about their open-mindedness and acceptance. We did it before it was the cool thing to do, we'll be doing it after it stops being cool and becomes the norm. I feel safe in saying that we were one of the first to make gay characters a part of our core game, and we've never thought of it as anything unusual or praiseworthy. But it's apparent that everyone else thinks it is. I want some of that bloody praise. And we should get an award. Perhaps even two. At least when we deal with sexuality, we don't just do just to burnish our PC cred or for shock or marketing value."\

Miller and Hundal did not specify which Golden Age comic book characters they have turned gay this time; "We're going a give-away," Miller said. "The first three people to successfully identify which characters we turned gay in those books will receive free digital copies of all our comics releases through DrivethruComics until the end of 2013."

The contest will be formally announced through NUELOW Games' Facebook page, but the possible choices are Black Cat (aka Linda Turner), British Agent 99 (aka Alan Douglas), Daisy Smythe (no known aka), Jill Trent (no known aka), Karl Vern (no known aka), Lady Satan (aka unknown), and Tim Trent (aka Black Cat, retired), A couple of those are pretty easy to figure out, however.

Another busy day dawns for Jill Trent and Daisy Smythe,
