An Adventure Outline for the Chilling Season

Halloween is fast approaching, and NUELOW's Steve Miller has come up with something seasonally appropriate. It's an adventure outline like the ones he used to do when working on the Ravenloft line for TSR. (There will be more coming in a release later in the month.)

Anthem for the Sunken Choir
An underwater excavation under severe time pressure, negotiating with a congregation of the drowned dead.

Premise & Player-Character Hook
The PCs are hired by a salvage consortium (or a grieving coastal diocese) to recover the Silver Angelus—a legendary cathedral bell made of consecrated silver—from the Drowned Basilica of Saint Jude. The basilica rests in ocean waters off a fog-bound coast and is accessible only during the "King's Low Tide," a rare astronomical alignment granting a three-hour window of exploration before the sea returns with crushing force. The PCs must escort and protect two specialists: Jonah Wren, an ex-naval diver, and Isadora March, a grieving trance-medium.

Recommended Tone & Setting

Tone: Claustrophobic, elegiac, ticking-clock tension; aquatic dread and spectral sorrow.
Setting: The Drowned Basilica of Saint Jude—a barnacle-encrusted, kelp-strangled Gothic cathedral submerged in cold coastal waters, its vaulted stone ceilings trapping pockets of foul, compressed air.

Important NPCs & Agendas
Jonah Wren (The Haunted Diver): A traumatized salvage veteran who lost his former crew to a diving disaster. He is desperately in love with Isadora and seeks to protect her from the ocean depths at all costs.
Isadora March (The Trance Medium): A coastal singer whose voice allows spirits to speak through her. She is drawn to the drowned basilica by sorrowful songs in her dreams. She feels intense empathy for the dead and cannot bear to leave them suffering.
Father Mael & The Sunken Choir (The Drowned Dead): The waterlogged spirits of the priest and congregation who drowned during a cataclysmic tidal surge a century ago. They believe their souls cannot ascend until a living cantor sings their final requiem mass.

The Central Mystery
Why did the cathedral sink in a single night, and why are the spirits of the parish trapped in the submerged nave?
The Truth: The town sank because the clergy struck a blasphemous pact with an oceanic leviathan for bountiful fishing. The Silver Angelus bell was forged to seal the pact. The drowned dead are not inherently malevolent—they are prisoners of an unfinished, watery liturgy that requires a living human voice to conclude before they can be released.

Locations & Investigation Scenes
The Exposed Reef & Belfry Tip: The jagged spire of the cathedral piercing the surf at low tide, where the salvage boat anchors and air-hose lines are rigged.
The Drowned Narthex: The entrance hall, filled with waist-deep tide water, floating pews, and predatory moray eels nesting in stone holy-water fonts.
The Flooded Nave: A massive, towering hall where shafts of greenish sunlight pierce leaded glass windows. Ghostly silhouettes float along the ceiling like drowned fish.
The Organ Loft & Air Vault: An upper chamber holding a massive, barnacled pipe organ, accessible only by climbing kelp-slick pillars into an oily pocket of breathable, compressed air.
The High Altar & The Angelus Crypt: The deepest point of the sanctuary, where the Silver Angelus hangs above a yawning sea-chasm, surrounded by kneeling, waterlogged skeletons.

Escalating Threats & Encounters
The Ticking Tide Clock: The GM tracks the tide in real-time or rounds. Water levels rise steadily; air pockets compress, and passages flood completely.
Spectral Hypothermia: When ghosts drift through living PCs, they inflict severe chill, drain air supplies, and induce auditory hallucinations of underwater singing.
Grasping Congregation: Drowned corpses rise from the silt to seize diving air hoses, trying to pull the living into their circle to listen to their silent prayers.
Structural Collapse: The pressure of the returning tide shatters ancient masonry, dropping gargoyles, stone ribs, and iron chandeliers into the nave.

Clues & Discoveries
The Parish Registry (Recovered from a Lead Box): Lists the names of the entire choir alongside the exact date the ocean swallowed the coast.
The Organ’s Music Sheet: A stone-engraved musical score for the "Requiem of the Deep Tide," requiring a high soprano voice to hit the final, sanctifying note.
Damaged Air Pumps: Evidence on the salvage boat that the syndicate’s gear is substandard—there is only enough reliable diving equipment for a rapid evacuation.

Meaningful Player Choices
Do the PCs focus strictly on hauling the priceless Silver Angelus bell to the surface, or do they prioritize helping Isadora finish the choir’s requiem?
When diving lines tangle and air tanks fail during the returning tide, who receives the working breathing apparatus?
Will the PCs allow Isadora to enter a deep, dangerous trance to pacify the spirits, knowing the strain could drown her?

Possible Endings
Anthem for the Sunken Choir (Canonical Tragedy): Trapped as the tide rushes back in and equipment fails, Isadora stays behind in the flooded choir loft, singing the soaring final requiem that pacifies the ghosts and holds back collapsing rubble so Jonah and the PCs can escape. Jonah reaches the surface, but broken by the loss of Isadora, removes his helmet and walks back into the crashing surf to join her.
The Completed Requiem (Bittersweet Transcendence): The PCs assist Isadora in singing the mass while operating the pipe organ and defending her from falling debris. The choir is released in blinding light; the cathedral collapses peacefully, and the PCs surface with Jonah and Isadora alive, though the bell is lost to the chasm.
The Salvage Triumph (Heist Success): The PCs ignore the spirits, blast the Silver Angelus free with explosives, and drag it to the surface before the tide seals the tomb. The dead remain trapped and enraged, cursing the coast with eternal storms, while Jonah and Isadora leave the syndicate in bitter disgust.
Drowned in the Dark (Grim Failure): The party lingers too long; the tide reclaims the basilica. Isadora is taken by the congregation to be their eternal cantor; Jonah drowns attempting to pull her free, and the PCs must fight through crushing depths to reach their ship.

GM Complications & Secrets
The Crew in the Deep: Among the spectral congregation are the drowned sailors from Jonah’s former salvage vessel, begging Jonah to join them in the dark.
The Bell’s Acoustic Curse: If struck beneath the water, the Silver Angelus emits a deafening sonic wave that disorients living divers, shatters glass visors, and enrages aquatic predators.
