The Opportunity
Lady Cassandra Veyren waits in the shadowed alcove of the Gilded Swan tavern, her fine silks at odds with the establishment's rough clientele. She speaks plainly: her father's assassination has left the succession to rulership in chaos, and three cousins stand between her and the throne she believes is rightfully hers... despite her birth out of wedlock. She offers the party 500 gold per rival "removed from consideration"—whether through scandal, exile, or more permanent means is left to their discretion. Her desire burns cold and calculated; she's already hired informants, bribed servants, and planted evidence. She needs capable hands to execute the final moves.
The Complications
Each rival presents a different moral challenge. Cousin Dmitri is a gambling addict whose debts could easily be weaponized, but he genuinely cares for the common people and has proposed tax reforms. Cousin Elara is having an affair that could destroy her reputation, yet she's the only candidate who opposes the kingdom's expansionist war. Cousin Theron is corrupt and cruel, an easy target—but he's also Cassandra's only real competition, and removing him might reveal that Cassandra's methods are even darker than his. As the party investigates, they discover Cassandra has already poisoned one rival who "died of natural causes" and plans to frame another for treason. The party must choose: complete the contract and install a ruthless but effective ruler, sabotage Cassandra and support a flawed but perhaps more moral candidate, or expose the entire conspiracy and let the succession fall to chaos. Each choice reshapes the kingdom's future, and Cassandra is not someone who forgives betrayal.
