RPG-a-Day 1: Discipline

"Discipline is important when it comes to shapeshifting, especially if you want to look like the same human or other creature each time. Even after you think you've mastered a form, you'll get the facial features wrong, you'll get the patterns on the fur wrong, or you'll walk into town with fire where your eyes should be. I've used my favorite human shape for some 5,000 years now, and I still get the face wrong if I don't take a moment to clear my mind before assuming it. One hour of yoga while in the human shape every morning also does wonders keeping the form consistent and real."
--Brigid the Red, a dragon living among humans

Adventure Seed: The Silent Ritual
The Monastery of Eternal Silence sits in mist-shrouded highlands, its bells long since removed, its halls echoing with the absence of sound. Abbot Thorne welcomes travelers with gestures and written notes, offering sanctuary to those seeking peace, redemption, or escape from the noise of the world. The monks move like ghosts, their discipline so complete they seem to barely disturb the air.

The rules are simple: maintain silence, meditate for six hours daily, eat only what is provided, sleep when the candles are extinguished. The characters find unexpected peace in the routine. Discipline becomes a refuge, structure replacing chaos. But peace curdles into unease when they notice the locked doors, the monks' synchronized movements at midnight, the way Abbot Thorne's eyes seem to look through rather than at them.

Following the monks one night, the characters discover chambers beneath the monastery where the brothers sit in perfect circles, minds linked in meditation so deep it borders on death. They're holding something back—a presence that presses against reality like a hand against wet paper, something that exists in the spaces between thoughts. The ritual requires absolute mental discipline; a single broken focus creates a crack through which it can enter. And the monastery's records reveal this has been going on for centuries, each generation of monks sacrificing their minds to keep the thing contained.

The Twist: The entity feeds on undisciplined thoughts—chaos, impulse, emotion. The monks aren't just containing it; they're starving it. But their numbers are dwindling, and the newest initiates aren't strong enough. If the ritual fails, the entity will flood into a world full of undisciplined minds like a feast.

Why Get Involved: Seeking refuge, investigating missing persons who came to the monastery, hired to retrieve an ancient text from the library, or experiencing visions that lead them to this specific place.
